Honoring National Disability Employment awareness month
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), an annual celebration of the value and talent workers with disabilities add to America’s workplaces and economy. At Point32Health, we have a long-standing commitment to advancing DEIA initiatives, including creating an inclusive work environment and promoting disability inclusion within our organizations. This commitment is demonstrated in our community of care initiatives, demonstrated in our work within our walls and in our community.
Our comprehensive DEIA and health equity team helps our organization find meaningful ways to prioritize inclusivity in our workplace. From our Abilities+ colleague resource group to our prioritization of inclusive recreation leagues and fitness facilities on our campus, Point32Health, as an employer, prioritizes making continuous improvements to our disability-inclusive practices. continues to strive to be an employer that continually improves our disability-inclusive practices.
How Point32Health prioritizes inclusion, equity, and accessibility in the workplace
The Point32Health colleague resource groups (CRGs) are helping our organization drive engagement, build community, develop leaders and contribute to overall business success. One of those CRGs focuses on inclusion for colleagues with disabilities.
The Abilities+ CRG mission is to partner with the disability community to foster advocacy, education, opportunity, accessibility and inclusion. Through their work, Abilities+ creates an inclusive environment that recognizes and celebrates all people with disabilities, helping to make Point32Health a company of choice both for colleagues and members with disabilities.
Our colleague well-being team also works to ensure we are focusing on inclusivity through our fitness centers and recreation leagues. Throughout the year, Point32Health offers a number of company-sponsored sports leagues aimed at getting employees moving and involved in activities on campus. We also offer an on-site fitness center. Here is how both our sports leagues and fitness center work to promote inclusion for all colleagues.
Recreation Leagues:
- Staff strive to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable. Our rec leagues bring a variety of abilities and skill levels together. We make sure we celebrate all the wins and cheer each other on in a supportive environment.
- All are welcome, we never turn anyone away. Sometimes that might be having someone be a “coach” or spectator while they see what the rec leagues are all about before joining.
- We remind players of sportsmanship in all leagues.
Fitness Center:
- We feature a variety of equipment for all fitness experience levels and a supportive staff to help teach how to use or help with setting of machines.
- We offer a complimentary fitness assessments and program design while also aiming to create a supportive and welcoming environment for everyone.
- We provide multiple options for group fitness classes, led by instructors who motivate people to work hard in a way that works for them.
Point32Health named Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion
This summer, Point32Health was named a Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion by Disability:IN and the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD). We also scored 100 percent on the Disability Equality Index, an objective, reflective, forward-thinking and confidential disability rating tool designed to assist business in advancing inclusion practices. Point32Health’s recognition stemmed from launching disability inclusive marketing materials, reporting disability information in the 2023 DEIA & Health Equity report and enhancing accessibility features across company social media platforms.
We know that one in four adults in the U.S. have a disability, whether apparent or nonapparent, which means many of us are connected to the disability community in some way. As an organization, Point32Health will continue to promote a more equitable and accessible experience for our colleagues and for the members and communities we serve.
